First-Generation Celebration

So far, the week’s events include:

  • Guest speakers and panels featuring first-generation and Montana Tech alumni:
    • Steve Ferry (‘97 MS Environmental Engineering, Operations Project Manager – BP)
    • Marci Sheehan (’89 Society and Technology, ARCO-retired)
    • Phillip Vye (’88 Engineering Science, Sales Engineer – Industrial Gasses, MESSER Americas)
    • Debbie A. Tesdal (’98 Business Information Technology, Financial Analyst – BP)
    • Kelli Harrington-Lalonde (’02 Petroleum Engineering, Director of Engineering, Tervita Corp)
    • And others.
  • Round table discussions focused on a campus approach to leveling the playing field for first-generation students
  •  Mentoring opportunities - research shows retention and graduation rates among first-generation students who have a campus mentor are significantly higher than their peers who have not made this connection. Students who can identify with faculty and staff of the same background (first-gen) are more likely to engage with those people and feel less isolated. We desire to encourage faculty and staff who identify as first-generation to take on this opportunity to welcome interaction and connections with first-generation students.
  • Videos featuring first-generation students, faculty, and staff on social media
  • First-gen swag
