Montana Tech Participates in National Health Campaign
The Butte-Silver Bow Health Department and Montana Tech are again joining forces to bring the national “Get Yourself Tested” (GYT) campaign to Montana Tech. GYT will occur Tuesday, April 12th from 9am to 3pm in the Student Union of Montana Tech.
The goal of GYT is to reduce the spread of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). The statistic for getting an STD is very high, in particular for the young (15-24). Young people account for half of the 20 million people in the United States that have an STD. It should be noted, however that the CDC recommends all adults and adolescents from ages 13 to 64 should be tested at least once for HIV.
“We are in our 6th year of partnering with our Butte-Silver Bow Health Department,” reports Joyce O’Neill, Counselor of Montana Tech. “We had a successful event at Highlands College during the annual spring Wellness Fair in February and this one on our Main Campus also helps mark April as STD Awareness Month.”
GYT allows for people to get sexual health information in a positive non-shaming way. “We have put a lot of effort into providing sexual consent education to our students. In addition to asking for consent, ‘Have you been tested?’ should also be part of that discussion,” notes Cricket Pietsch, Montana Tech Counselor.
