Martin Luther King Jr. Read for Peace National Day of Service

MLK Read for Peace is a service project that places volunteers in kindergarten through sixth-grade classrooms to read students age appropriate books about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. In 2018, 89 volunteers participated in Read for Peace and over 2,400 students statewide were reached.
MLK Read for Peace will be held around the state in the weeks of and leading up to Martin Luther King, Jr. Day in January. The impact of Dr. King’s work and life on American history is not often a required part of elementary curriculum. Although students enjoy a long weekend in observation of MLK Day every January, they may not understand the significance of this day. MLK Read for Peace provides students a chance to learn about and engage in Dr. King’s message of peace and equality, and provides both service members and community volunteers a chance to promote his legacy.

Montana Tech’s Institute for Educational Opportunities, Montana Campus Compact AmeriCorps, and the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) are working together on this service project in Butte.

"We are very excited to bring Dr. King's words of peace and love to the elementary school students in Butte and Anaconda,” noted Adam Maes, MTCC AmeriCorps Team Leader at Montana Tech. “In today's world, it is important to remind ourselves that, despite our differences we can find common ground. It is our privilege to pass on Dr. King's message that we still value diversity and encourage acceptance, love, and equality for all."

On January 21, 2019 in Butte, volunteers will be reading at Whittier Elementary, Margaret Leary Elementary, Emerson Elementary, Kennedy Elementary, and Hillcrest Elementary. High School volunteers will also be reading at Lincoln Elementary School in Anaconda. In total, approximately 1,380 elementary students will be impacted by this volunteer effort.
