Expectations for Faculty - Advising

Academic Advising is a critical component of students’ educational experiences.  Thorough academic advising should empower students to become self-directed learners and decision makers.  It is important to realize that it isn’t just about picking courses, it is about coaching students to make career choices that are right for their goals and strengths.  Sometimes students need help recognizing that they are not in the right major for them and they need additional guidance.

Advisors should be available to help students make informed decisions by providing:

• Accurate and timely advice
• Appropriate referrals
• Assistance clarifying academic and career goals
• Providing a friendly environment where students feel comfortable and supported
