Athletic Director

Matt Stepan was named Montana Technological University’s Director of Athletics on September 1st of 2017 after working for three years as External Associate Athletic Director.

Stepan played outside linebacker for the Orediggers from 1999-2003 under Coach Bob Green earning all-conference honors in 2002 and 2003. Stepan led the Frontier Conference in sacks as a junior and senior, was a four-time Frontier Conference Defensive Player of the Week, and was the winner of the prestigious Ed Simonich Award in 2004 that is given to the student-athlete who represents what it means to be an Oredigger both on and off the field. 

Stepan graduated from Montana Tech with a Bachelor of Science in Business and Information Technology in 2004 before working as a project manager for large construction companies in both Utah and Northern California. After returning to Butte, Stepan worked as a Financial Advisor with the Chamberlin Group for two years.

Stepan remains an active member on a number of community boards in Butte serving on the Chamber of Commerce, Advantage Butte, and the Mining City Little Guy Football League. He also is a member of the Montana Officials Association refereeing high school football and wrestling.

In his time as Director of Athletics, Stepan has doubled the number of varsity sports the Orediggers are competing in with the goal of offering more opportunities for students to compete at the collegiate level and graduate from Montana Technological University.

Stepan’s father Ed also played football at Montana Tech and graduated in 1980 with a degree in Occupational Safety & Health while Stepan’s sister, Amy Hogan, graduated from Tech in 2002 with a degree in Metallurgical Engineering.

Matt lives in Butte with his wife Sarah, their three children: Will, Mattie, and Ty and their dog Digger.
