Montana Technological University Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer Chad Okrusch recently appeared on the “Smarter Campus” podcast, hosted by higher education AI leader Zach Kinzler, to discuss Montana Tech's emerging approach to artificial intelligence, innovation, and responsible institutional change.
During the interview, Okrusch outlined a distinctly human-centered vision for AI adoption, emphasizing that the challenge is not simply technological, but organizational, educational, and ethical. He described his role as "neither the AI police nor an AI champion, but a human advocate and institutional steward," focused on helping Montana Tech adapt intelligently while protecting learning, judgment, privacy, trust, and human flourishing.
Okrusch highlighted Montana Tech's efforts to integrate AI in ways that strengthen teaching, learning, research, and administrative effectiveness while maintaining a strong commitment to academic integrity and shared governance. He discussed ongoing work with faculty, staff, students, and campus governance groups to identify practical uses for AI, develop appropriate guardrails, and ensure that technological innovation remains aligned with Montana Tech's STEM mission and values.
