Montana Technological University invites the community and members of the press to a ribbon-cutting ceremony for its new Iron and Steelmaking Laboratory on Tuesday, February 17, 2026 at 1:30 p.m. The event will take place in the Engineering Laboratory Classroom Building (ELC) on the Montana Tech campus.
This celebration marks a significant investment in the future of metallurgical and materials engineering and hands-on education. The ceremony also serves as the official launch of Montana Tech’s inaugural Iron and Steelmaking Days, a dedicated series of events designed to connect current students with industry-leading practices and networking opportunities.
The Iron and Steelmaking Laboratory serves as a hub for innovation, practical training, and strong industry-academic partnerships. It supports undergraduate and graduate instruction, provides state-of-the-art facilities for experiential education and applied research, workforce development, and industry collaboration.
The laboratory was established through the generous support of industry partners. Funding provided by Nucor enabled the purchase of the laboratory hood system, briquetter, reduction-under-load test system, tumble drum, high-temperature, high-capacity thermogravimetric analysis furnace, and induction furnace. Personal protective equipment was provided by Cleveland-Cliffs Inc.
Industry partners are encouraged to engage through sponsored projects, equipment and material contributions, guest lectures, and student mentorship.
