At Montana Technological University, Orediggers take care of each other and know that an unexpected emergency can strike at any time. When it does, it can derail even the most determined student.
Long-time Montana Tech administrator and faculty member Joe Kasperick understood this better than most. Throughout his career, he saw students face sudden financial challenges they couldn’t manage alone. In true Oredigger spirit, he decided to do something about it. His solution became the Kasperick Emergency Fund, created to deliver immediate, compassionate support to students in crisis.
“Our students at Montana Tech truly embody what it means to be determined doers, and their commitment to their goals and dreams is demonstrated both inside and outside the classroom,” Vice Provost for Student Success and Dean of Students Joe Cooper said. “But, life happens, and students sometimes do find themselves asking, ‘what am I going to do now,’ when faced with an unexpected situation or barrier. This is where the Kasperick Fund makes all the difference. Your generous donations allow Montana Tech to help students when they need it most. For many of these students, receiving support from the Kasperick Fund helps get them over that bump and ultimately, across the graduation stage.”
The fund now helps Montana Tech students navigate unforeseen emergencies—from medical bills, essential food and supplies, and emergency travel to childcare needs and other unexpected costs that threaten academic progress. Sometimes even a small intervention can prevent a temporary setback from becoming a permanent barrier to graduation.
As Giving Tuesday arrives, Montana Tech often receives a question from alumni, friends, and community members: How can I directly help students who are struggling?

“The Kasperick Emergency Fund embodies the best of the Montana Tech community, Orediggers helping Orediggers,” Vice President of Development and Philanthropic Engagement Shannon Panisko said.“We are deeply grateful for alumni and friends whose generosity gives our students the chance to stay focused on their future.
A gift of any size provides real, immediate relief for students facing difficult moments. When you donate, you’re not just easing a financial burden—you’re sending a powerful message to today’s Orediggers that they’re part of a community that won’t let them face hardship alone.
