Montana Technological University is a top-ranked college, according to Forbes. The University is listed on the Forbes 2026 America's Top Colleges List, which ranks the top 500 private and public institutions in the nation.
“Montana Tech is proud to offer students an affordable education that can deliver a powerful return on investment,” Vice Provost for Student Success and Dean of Students Joe Cooper said. “Our outcomes, including placement rates and average starting salaries, continue to demonstrate that our ever-changing world needs Montana Tech graduates.”
The rankings note that Oredigger graduates have a median salary of $125,500 after 20 years of work experience. Alumni salary is weighted for 20% of the ranking score. Student debt accounts for another 15%. Forbes methodology notes Montana Tech's students graduate with an average debt of $5,999. Average debt, calculated using Forbes methodology, of similar institutions on the Top Colleges List include Montana State University - $9,510, Colorado School of Mines - $9,759, and South Dakota School of Mines - $7,924.

Graduation rate, retention rate, academic success, and return-on-investment each make up a 10-15% portion of the ranking. Schools that produce exceptional graduates named on Forbes 30 Under 30, Forbes 400, Richest Self-Made Women, and Most Powerful Women lists receive up to a 15% boost in rankings.
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology rose to the top of the list this year, dethroning Princeton University. This is the third time Montana Tech has appeared on Forbes ranking lists. The university was ranked as an America's Best Value College 2019, and as a Top College in 2022.

The Ryan and Lisa Lance Scholars Program, launched in 2023 provides financial assistance and mentorship opportunities to selected scholars throughout their academic journey. Each year, the program provides 50 in-state students with the opportunity to receive a $4,000 per year scholarship, renewable for up to an additional three years (up to $16,000 total).
