Montana Tech Provost Announces Retirement Plans

Montana Technological University Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Dr. Steven Gammon will retire at the end of the 2022-2023 academic year, Montana Tech Chancellor Dr. Les Cook announced today. 

Dr. Gammon joined the university in 2018 as the dean of the College of Letters, Sciences, & Professional Studies. He was appointed provost and vice chancellor in 2019 during the emergence of COVID-19 in Montana. He was instrumental in leading the university team through the height of the pandemic. 

“Dr. Gammon helped our campus navigate the challenges and uncertainties of COVID-19, built partnerships with two-year institutions, enhanced academic programs, launched a new strategic plan, and invested over $2.5M in technology upgrades and renovations in our classrooms and academic labs,” noted Montana Tech Chancellor Les Cook. 

Dr. Gammon’s leadership has consistently reflected a commitment to faculty, teaching, and learning. He led the effort to fill three key dean positions for the university’s colleges bringing leaders to Montana Tech who are dedicated to academic success. He also led a grassroots effort to bring professional development for faculty and staff to campus. Another major accomplishment was through partnering with faculty, he created the Center for Academic Innovation, bringing innovative tools and techniques to the campus community. 

Prior to coming to Montana Tech, Gammon served in roles at other institutions as provost/vice president for academic affairs, executive vice president for collaboration and strategic alliances, academic vice president, department head, and professor. Gammon is the co-author of a market-leading general chemistry textbook used nationally and internationally. The book has been translated into Spanish and is in its 11th Edition. He also received a national teaching award from the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and was Idaho Professor of the Year in 1995. 
 
Dr. Gammon and his wife, Jodi, plan to remain in Butte. They love the community and look forward to continuing to be a part of and engage more in Butte. He is an avid fly fisherman and plans to fish more, bike more, and spend more time with his family. 
 
Montana Tech will launch a national search for the position. The goal is to have a new provost and vice chancellor on July 1, 2023.
