Montana Tech Hosting Interactive Poverty Simulation Event
The Community Action Poverty Simulation will give nursing students a glimpse into the structural barriers and some of the personal and emotional repercussions people in poverty face. The objective is to shift the paradigm about poverty away from being seen as a personal failure and toward understanding poverty as structural, a failure of society.
Approximately 60 nursing students will go through the learning experience. Volunteers from Butte-Silver Bow, who help poverty/lower-income members of our community, will be a part of the event, which will run from noon to 4:00 pm in the Copper Lounge on campus.
This learning tool will help Montana Tech nursing students understand the realities of poverty. "The Montana Tech Nursing Department is excited to implement this simulation into our Mental Health and Community Health courses," noted Megan Rediske, Montana Tech Assistant Professor and Mental Health Instructor. "The poverty simulation is not a game, but an experience supported by research. It allows the students to glimpse the structural barriers of poverty at the local level. The participants must make real-world choices in how to provide for basic necessities and shelter on a limited budget."
