Fifty university student leaders from around the world were awarded a Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG) travel grant to attend the SEG/Chevron Student Leadership Symposium in Anaheim, CA. Montana Tech student Andrew Wilson, from Kalispell, Montana, is one of the recipients. Wilson, majoring in Geophysical Engineering at Montana Tech, serves as the president of the local student chapter of SEG at Montana Tech. The student awardees represent 28 countries and 50 university student chapters worldwide.
“Andrew is the president of our student chapter of the SEG,” noted Marvin Speece, Professor and Chair of the Geophysical Engineering Department. “He is an effective leader and is very deserving of this recognition.”
“I am honored to represent Montana Tech at the SEG/Chevron Student Leadership Symposium and will reflect the academic and personal excellence encouraged at Montana Tech,” said Wilson. “I am very grateful for and appreciate all of the support I have received from faculty and mentors in the Geophysical Engineering department at Montana Tech. This great opportunity and honor is a testament to the dedication, knowledge, and passion of faculty in the Geophysical Engineering department at Montana Tech, and I look forward to representing our department.”
The Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG)/Chevron Student Leadership Symposium (SLS) is a collaborative effort between SEG and Chevron focusing on building leadership, teamwork, real world problem solving, and communication skills for 50 SEG student chapter officers.
The awarded students will participate in a two-day leadership program, taking place October 13-14, 2018 at the SEG Annual Meeting in Anaheim, CA. Competition for the travel grant is highly competitive and focused on the students’ chapter involvement, leadership skills, grades, and recommendations. This grant covers air transportation, lodging, meals, Annual Meeting registration, and participation in a weekend leadership course provided by SEG and Chevron. The SEG/Chevron Student Leadership Symposium includes an address by the SEG President, best practices presentations, professional leadership coaching, team building activities, and networking opportunities with the SEG Executive Committee and Chevron personnel. Students will enjoy the rest of the week exploring all the venues of the International Exposition and Annual Meeting.
