Luke McCulloch, a Montana Tech Metallurgical & Materials Engineering senior from Billings, Montana, has been honored with a Copper Club Scholarship for the 2018/2019 school year. The Barry Feldman Memorial Scholarship is $10,000 scholarship endowed in memory of Barry Feldman, who was the global head of physical trading at Red Kite Capital Management for many years, and unfortunately passed away in 2014.
Typically, five internationally competitive scholarships are awarded annually by The Copper Club, Inc. with the top award being as much as $10,000. Luke is obviously ecstatic about getting the top award. A quote from his essay in his application says it all: “Through my education at Montana Tech, I have found my passion in Metallurgical Engineering. With this scholarship I will be able to finish my degree and pursue a career in a field that I love.” He now adds “debt-free” to that!
Established in 1994, The Copper Club makes contributions from accumulated excess funds to causes and educational programs associated with the copper industry. In this manner, they assist exceptional students preparing for careers in fields related to all facets of the copper industry including mining, geology, mineral processing and extractive metallurgy. The criterion for the scholarship is academic excellence and need of financial assistance. 19 Montana Tech students have won this prestigious award.
Luke is the 9th student in Metallurgical & Materials Engineering to receive the scholarship. He is emphasizing his education in mineral processing and extractive metallurgy due to his interests in flotation, leaching and solution recovery as well as analysis and water treatment.
