The Montana Tech men’s wrestling team qualified 8 wrestlers for the National Collegiate Wrestling Tournament (NCWA) to be held March 8th-10th at the Allen Convention Center in Allen, Texas. More than 490 student-athletes represented by 9 regions will take to the mats on Thursday the 9th to see who is the best at eleven respective weight divisions. Montana Tech is currently ranked 14th out of the more than 80 teams in Division II. Montana Tech returns to the NCWA National Tournament with an Academic All American Jake Hobbes at the tough 285# division. Jake is a Petroleum Engineering major and has maintained a 3.8 GPA for more than two years.
Montana Tech has five other wrestlers considered a threat for All-American honors by the NCWA Coaches Association beginning with sophomore 133# Demetri Koures ranked 8th after his stellar performance in the Northwest Region qualifier earning him outstanding wrestler of the tournament by defeating Hunter Haney, returning 3rd place All-American finisher in 2017 in an overtime match 14-12. Demetri also pinned two other contenders: one in 23 seconds with a hip toss. Other Montana Tech wrestlers who have earned recognition for their regular season efforts are: Timothy Ellinger at 141# ranked 11th, Doug Womack at 197# ranked 17th, Chris Moodry at 157# ranked 18th and Kaelan Yanak at 285# ranked 21st.
