Edward I. Renouard Endowed Scholarship Benefits Local Students Pursuing Their Educational Goals at Montana Tech
A scholarship honoring the accomplishments and memory of Edward Ignatius Renouard has been established on Montana Tech’s campus through a gift from his son and daughter-in-law, Edward J. and Bunny Renouard. The Edward I. Renouard Endowed Scholarship will benefit graduates from Butte High and Butte Central as they pursue their educational goals.
“Montana Tech is a first-class school and a source of great pride in Butte,” said Edward J. Renouard. “My dad, who graduated from this school when it was the Montana School of Mines, would love the idea of benefiting young Butte students. We are blessed to establish the Edward I Renouard Endowed Scholarship.”
Born in 1898, Edward I. Renouard lived his entire life in Butte. He graduated in 1920 with a degree in Mining Engineering. He had a long and distinguished career with the Anaconda Company, starting as a miner and retiring from the company as Vice President and General Manager of Western Operations.
Edward I. Renouard received many awards and accolades during his career, including a professional degree from the Montana School of Mines in 1953 and election into the Montana Tech Alumni Hall of Fame in 1966 in recognition of his outstanding service to the campus and its alumni association. A plaque recognizing his induction into the Alumni Hall of Fame currently hangs on campus in the Mill Building and will eventually be placed in the forthcoming Student Success Center, giving our current students a better understanding and appreciation of the history, heritage, and accomplishments of those who came before them.
In 1963, the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers presented Edward Renouard with the William Lawrence Sanders Gold Medal at a ceremony in Dallas, Texas. The award was given “For major contributions to improved mining methods, conservation of resources and perpetuation of the Butte Mining District, through imaginative planning, strong leadership and sound administration.”
“Montana Tech produces leaders, difference-makers, innovators, and problem-solvers,” said Michael Barth, Executive Director of the Montana Tech Foundation. “Clearly Edward I. Renouard was all of these. He was a Butte native, life-long resident and loyal Oredigger. I am so pleased to have been able to work with his family to establish this scholarship. Generations of our community’s young people will have the extraordinary opportunity that is a Montana Tech education made more accessible through this scholarship.”
