Montana Tech’s 25-yard swimming pool will open on Monday, March 27, 2017 after being offline since 2011 when the pool closed due to mechanical and ventilation issues.
Bentley Construction began work on the pool in April 2016. They were the contractor who initially installed the pool on Montana Tech’s campus in 1977 and was the lowest contract bidder for the project.
The renovation of the pool cost approximately $457,000. The project consisted of the installation of a new stainless steel drainage gutter, replace ceramic tile flooring, repair pool shell as necessary, install new PVC pool liner with lane markings, upgrade pool drains and fixtures according to Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act anti-entrapment devices, paint ceiling and ductwork with epoxy coating, replace old lighting with new LED lighting, install new chemical treatment feed system, install security monitoring video cameras and telephone, and installation of a new ADA compliant pool stairs. The project also consisted of complete piping system, sand filter system, water heating system, chemical feed and monitoring system components check out and operating start-up; balance chemicals and water for safety, hygiene, and comfort, and heat water to 78 to 80 degrees F.<
The Montana Tech pool holds 186,000 gallons of water and is a six-lane, 25-yard pool. The pool is 3.5 feet deep in the shallow end and 12 feet in the deep end. The pool is for student, faculty and staff use. Community memberships are available to use the pool and the HPER facilities. The pool is equipped with all necessary lifesaving and ADA equipment.
Student-athletes will also do low impact conditioning and rehab in the pool. Programing for the pool consists of designated lap swim times, university intramurals and club sports. Montana Tech’s scuba diving class will take place in the pool along with human performance labs performing hydrostatic weighing.
The pool will be open the same as the HPER Complex operational hours. When the university is in session during the Fall and Spring Semesters, the HPER is open Monday through Thursday 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Fridays and noon to 5 p.m. on weekends. During holiday breaks and summer, the HPER is only open Monday through Friday 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Fridays.
“Montana Tech continues to improve our facilities in order to enhance our student’s overall experience and to improve our campus environment,” explained Montana Tech Chancellor Don Blackketter. “Our student leadership was instrumental in pushing for the completion of this project in order to have another healthy activity for our campus and community. We are pleased the project is complete and people take full advantage.”
