Committed to assist STEM instruction at all levels, Montana Tech and its Department of Metallurgical & Materials Engineering have partnered with ASM Materials Education Foundation to host a free one-week professional development workshop on minerals, metals and materials this summer. ASM Foundation’s mission is “to excite young people in materials science and engineering careers”.
The ASM Materials Camp will run from July 10-14, 2017 and is targeted to general science, chemistry, physics, math and technology High-School teachers; however, Middle School science teachers are also strongly encouraged to attend. Local teachers are welcome! Instruction occurs in both the classroom and laboratory but also includes industrial fieldtrips to see real-world applications. Attendees will learn how to engage their students using simple, low-cost experiments that can be easily integrated into their lesson plans. When implemented, it helps their students discover career opportunities in science and engineering.
Free attendance at this workshop is made possible by the generous financial support and many volunteers from Montana Tech, The Metallurgical & Materials Engineering Department, ASM Materials Education Foundation, Montana Tech’s Institute for Educational Opportunities as well as several industrial partners: REC Silicon, Montana Resources Inc., SeaCast/Montana Precision, Barrick Gold Corporation and the American Chemet Corporation. The camp will provide 4 CEUs, materials, lunches and snacks for all participants as well as housing for those who live out of town. They will also provide 40 OPI renewal units to teachers in Montana and elsewhere as needed. Graduate credits are also available! Two (2) graduate credits available (at participant’s expense) through the University of Missouri-Kansas City at $250 (which is optional).
