“Leap into Health” is the theme of this spring’s Wellness Fair at Highlands College. Appropriately scheduled on leap day, Monday, February 29th, from 10 to 1, the Fair has become a popular event for not only students, faculty, and staff, but for the many vendors who participate.
The purpose of the Montana Tech Wellness fairs is to expose Montana Tech students to the various resources on and off campus that are available in all aspects of health promotion. “We have a fair in the fall at the Student Union and at Highlands in the spring. Both have become premier events. People get to connect with others in fun and interactive ways, learning how to enhance their lifestyles physically and mentally,” notes Cricket Pietsch, Counselor of Highlands College.
Every spring Montana Tech partners with the Butte-Silver Bow Health Department in bringing GYT to our campuses. GYT (Get Yourself Tested) is a national campaign that promotes STD (sexually transmitted disease) testing. This year, GYT will be offered during the spring wellness fair. Participants will not only be able to get free HIV testing, but will have an opportunity to ask questions confidentially about their sexual health. STDs remain on the rise in the United States. According to the CDC young people account for half of the 20 million new sexually transmitted diseases occurring in the U.S. each year.
“Butte community members are more than welcome to join our college community in participating in our Wellness Fair,” reports Dr. John Garic, Dean of Highlands College. “We also experience new vendor participation each year and look forward to seeing new agencies and businesses join with us each year.”
The Spring Wellness Fair is sponsored by Montana Tech’s Department of Student Life. For further information about this event, please contact Amanda Badovinac at 406-496-4838 or Cricket Pietsch at 406-496-3730.
