On Monday, Montana Tech honored faculty, staff and students who served in the military at a luncheon on campus. Over 60 individuals were in attendance. At the event, the Student Veteran Task Force recognized 16 student veterans who were nominated for the Distinguished Student Veteran Award, which is based on reliability, initiative, community, and campus services.
The Task Force also announced the 2015 awardee as Occupational, Safety & Health student veteran David Garcia. David was selected due to his involvement as club president of the American Society of Safety Engineers Student Club. He has been involved in helping raise over $2,000 in fundraising and $2,500 in donations for the club. He has also planned volunteer events and doubled membership from the previous year. David is extremely involved with the veteran student body on campus. He has appeared in school videos, and spoke with the media regarding Montana Tech veteran services. He also aided in establishing the veterans lounge on campus and helped raise numerous donations for raffles at student veteran events.
“We were thrilled to receive 16 nominations from the campus. This is a special honor the Task Force awards to a very deserving student,” noted Janet Friesz, Supervisor of Enrollment Services/Veterans School Certifying Official. “David Garcia is an outstanding student and individual. He is very deserving of this award and is always willing to lend a helping hand when it comes to Montana Tech student veterans.”
