Highlands College Staff Member to use Technology to Review Folk Fest Food

Highlands College is proud to announce that its RevUp Montana Workforce Navigator, Kehli Hazlett, will be eating, blogging, Facebooking, Twittering and Instagramming about Butte food and its history from the Montana Folk Festival in July.

“I created my blog because of my love of food and Butte,” said Ms. Hazlett. “Our city and the State of Montana have a lot to offer both visitors and residents to go out and explore - not only food, but activities and histories. Using the various social media applications will allow me to spread news of our amazing Folk Festival to a wide audience.”

In addition to her food reviews, Hazlett will partner with the World Museum of Mining during the festival.  The World Museum of Mining Exhibit will explore how mining has contributed to agriculture and, in many respects, how mining was the pathway of some of Butte's favorite foods - the same foods that are being featured at the Folk Life Area of the Festival. 

In the World Museum of Mining Exhibit, there will be photographs and information on mining and agriculture as well as a presentation based on Ms. Hazlett’s graduate thesis entitled “The Foodways of Butte, Montana: Food and Culture in an Industrial American City”.  Her presentation will discuss foodways as cultural pathways whereby food preparation and consumption patterns can be traced through cultures and time. The food path of five Butte restaurants and their histories will be featured in her presentation.   “As perhaps is obvious by its name, Montana Tech is a ‘tech’ school,” said Dr. John M. Garic, Dean of Highlands College at Montana Tech. “Thus, it seems only natural that our ‘tech-savvy’ Kehli would use many of the latest social media apps to conduct her Folk Festival food reviews. I think it is very cool.”

Along with eating, blogging, Facebooking, Twittering and Instagramming, Ms. Hazlett looks forward to interacting with the public and visiting the World Museum of Mining area.  “I hope to visit all the food vendors at the Folk Festival, interview some of the general public, and see the great exhibit that Jeannette Kopf and her staff have put together this year.”
