Highlands College Donates Super Bowl Pool Funds to Cancer Center

The Student Leadership at Highlands College is sponsoring a Super Bowl Football Pool with all of the funds generated to be donated to the Cancer Center at St. James Healthcare in honor of Dr. Peter Sorini and his family.

“The Super Bowl is one of our country’s premier events and one of the most highly watched television shows,” said Dr. John M. Garic, Dean of Highlands College. “And while this is not something that we would ordinarily sponsor, as an educational institution, I was persuaded by the intent and goal of our Student Leadership to donate the funds to a good cause like the St. James Cancer Center.”

The $1 per square Super Bowl Football Pool has, so far, been really popular among the students, faculty and staff at Highlands College. Two full pool boards have been completed and another two are in process. Adding to the festivities, the Student Leadership at Highlands will be sponsoring a Super Bowl Luncheon for students, faculty and staff on Wednesday, January 28th. The Commons area at Highlands has been festooned with decorations and posters featuring the colors of the Seattle Seahawks and the New England Patriots.

“This Super Bowl is going to be extra special,” said Highlands student, Robert Neff. “The whole West Coast – East Coast thing is making the entire event more fun. Of course, here in Montana, we are part of the West Coast, so naturally we are for the Seahawks.” Not to be outdone, John Bargman, a fellow Highlands student disagreed because, he said, it is more important to be patriotic and go with New England’s red, white and blue.

The students selected St. James Cancer Center as the recipient of the Super Bowl Pool funds in honor of well-known Butte physician, Dr. Peter Sorini. Dr. Sorini’s wife, Stephanie, is an adjunct instructor at Highlands and his sister, Linda Granger, is a longtime faculty member there. St. James Cancer Center is an integrated cancer treatment facility with Radiation Oncology, Medical Oncology (chemotherapy), Hematology and laboratory services, all of which promotes a team approach to cancer treatment in a healing environment.
