The Highlands College Radiologic Technology Program, will be observing National Radiologic Technology Week, November 2-8. The weeklong celebration commemorates the discovery of the x-ray by Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen on November 8, 1895. The theme of the 2014 Recognition week, “Many Views with One Vision,” calls attention to the important role medical imaging and radiation therapy professionals play in patient care and health care safety.
“Radiologic Technologists, or Rad Techs as they are known, provide an invaluable service to both the patient and the healthcare providers in the community,” said Dan Owens, Chair of the Highlands College Health Care Programs and Instructor in the Radiologic Technology Program. “I am very proud of our students and their service and dedication to their discipline and, as a result, benefit all of us who need or may need quality health care.”
Radiologic technologists are the medical personnel who perform diagnostic imaging examinations and administer radiation therapy treatments. They are educated in anatomy, patient positioning, examination techniques, equipment protocols, radiation safety, radiation protection and basic patient care. Radiologic technologists work closely with radiologists, the physicians who interpret medical images to either diagnose or rule out disease or injury.
“I particularly admire our student Rad Techs,” said Dr. John M. Garic, Dean of Highlands College. “Their discipline is part science, part art and part communication skills. The skills they learn here at Highlands College will help them provide care that is both accurate as well as compassionate.”
Highlands College graduates receive an Associates of Applied Science in Radiologic Technologists and must pass a national certification exam. The program at Highlands was launched in 2004 and has now has graduates who work in and around Butte, across Montana, and across the country.
