The Montana Tech Mining Department will host a summer mining camp on campus July 7 through 11. The camp will teach participants the benefit of the mining industry, environmental stewardship, and sustainability.
Students will work alongside professors and mining industry professionals and will also perform lab activities, go on field trips, and work on hands-on activities at the Orphan Boy Mine. Students will experience what it’s like to work in the Mining Engineering field. Activities planned include local mine tours, a movie night, Fairmont Hot Springs, hands-on exercises such as blasting and underground work at the Orphan Boy Mine, and mineral processing. Participants will have access to mine equipment simulators to get a feel for operating large machines in a safe environment.
The camp is limited to 15 high schools students entering their junior or senior year in the fall of 2014. Applications for the camp must be submitted by June 1, 2014. Students will be informed of their admission by June 15, 2014. Total cost for the camp is $1,200. Thanks to the generous support of Imerys and other mining industry partners, scholarships are available for attendees, based on need. Fees include lodging, meals, travel to and from field trips, and other facility fees. Camp participants will arrive on campus on Monday, July 7th by 5:00 PM and depart on Friday, July 11th after 4:00 PM.
