Butte Family YMCA CEO, Phillip Borup announced today that The Butte Family YMCA and Montana Tech’s Institute for Educational Opportunities have partnered together offering a science and mathematics program implemented each week during the Y’s After School Program.
Montana Tech Tuesdays provides children attending the YMCA After School Program an opportunity to learn and experience science and math projects taught by various Montana Tech students and professors. These educational activities provide students an opportunity to learn about Montana Tech and the various clubs offered on Tech’s campus in order to spark student’s interest in college!
“Montana Tech is proud to serve our community by providing an opportunity for younger students to develop a positive relationship with academics through role models from their local college.” states Kehli Hazlett, the Institute’s Program Coordinator. “Students from the Nursing Department, Engineers without Borders, and Society of Women Engineers have started this new program off strongly and we will are delighted to commit to continuing this program during the Spring Semester,” Hazlett confirms.
This partnership gives the already established YMCA After School Program another avenue to engage their students.
“We value our partnership with Montana Tech and the Institute for Educational Opportunities as it has allowed us to implement a more prominent educational aspect to our After School Program,” said Brett Mihelish YMCA Youth Director.
The Y After School participation has doubled this past school year and currently has 40 students registered in the program. The program is offered to students from kindergarten through sixth grade each day school is in session and provides a fun, structured, and healthy place for kids to spend their afternoons. Students are offered homework help and healthy activities and snacks to keep them engaged in developing and leading healthy lifestyles including swimming, fitness and arts and crafts.
The YMCA and The Institute’s partnership has brought additional value to the existing Free Tutoring Program the Y offers at the Webster Garfield every Thursday evening.
