Montana Tech will join with colleges, universities, Butte’s own Safe Space, and other groups among 188 countries around the world to sponsor a One Billion Rising event on Thursday, February 14th from 11:30 to 1:00 pm in the Copper Lounge of Tech’s Student Union Building. The event will feature Zumba® Party dancing as well as healthy snacks and solidarity for the one billion women and girls surviving violence.
The One Billion Rising event is an effort to raise awareness and inspire advocacy about the fact that one in three women on the planet will be raped or beaten in her lifetime. Recognizing that this fact is an atrocity, the thought is that one billion women dancing could start a revolution. Leading the dancing at Tech will be Sara Forthofer, Estephania Johnson and Audrey Stahl.
“I am so pleased that Safe Space could partner with Montana Tech on this event,” said Brieanne Vermeire, Safe Space Sexual Assault Specialist. “Violence against women is a very important but difficult topic. We think that our dance party, with both men and women, is a wonderful celebration that will bring us to a new way of thinking and acting.”
