Montana Technological University, a premier STEM focused institution in Butte, Montana, is seeking a Vice Chancellor for Research and Dean of the Graduate School (VCR/D) to join their leadership team. Montana Tech is the only “special focus” institution in the Montana University System and is an extraordinary institution. The University is consistently recognized among America’s best values in undergraduate education and provides the highest return on investment of any institution in the state of Montana. The University also includes the Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology, a non-regulatory state geological survey. Couple these with an internationally renowned, century-old tradition of excellence in higher education and you have an institution and opportunities like no other. Also, the Montana Tech campus is located in the heart of one of Montana’s richest historical and cultural communities with access to some of the best outdoor recreation in the country.

This is an executive position reporting directly to the Chancellor. The VCR/D provides leadership, vision and direction for the university’s research enterprise and graduate school. Responsibilities include:

  • Provides leadership and promotes excellence and continuing growth for Tech’s research and graduate programs.
  • Responsible for assuring integrity in research and compliance with federal, state, and local regulations pertaining to research.
  • Assists campus in securing external research funding.
  • Collaboratively works with other Montana universities in executing and developing research and graduate programs.
  • Acts as the chief academic officer for all graduate programs.

The graduate school offers 15 Master programs and 2 PhD programs all in science and engineering related disciplines. Montana Tech’s total enrollment is approximately 2,500 students, including 225 graduate students. This past year, Montana Tech executed approximately $13 million in research expenditures.

Required Qualifications and Skills

  • Earned doctorate in a science or engineering field.
  • Proven record in obtaining research funding.
  • A research scholarly record commensurate with a Vice Chancellor of Research Position.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Works well within a team.
  • Experience in the development or management of a graduate program.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience with the management of research programs in a university, federal or industrial setting.
  • Experience in federal relations.
  • Experience in federal research regulations.
  • Established record of supervising graduate students.
  • Experience with international collaborations and international graduate-student recruiting.
