Montana Tech’s Safety, Health and Industrial Hygiene Department prepares students for successful safety and health careers. At Montana Tech, the Occupational Safety & Health degree (OSH) is an interdisciplinary major in health sciences and engineering that gives students an advantage of being highly skilled in a unique major that supports a variety of businesses. OSH students mimic real-world situations in the lab. An intern or graduate in the field might oversee an employer’s safety and health program, or train employees on safe practices, conduct audits of worksites, keep records, or learn how to communicate effectively across all levels of an organization. Nearly all graduates have rewarding careers as OSH professionals working in positions aimed at helping employees perform their work safely in a workplace free from recognized hazards.
*Accredited by the Applied Science Accreditation Commission (ASAC) of ABET (http://www.abet.org) and receive funding from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health.

Individuals most suited to succeed in the courses and in their early careers are people with sound technical capabilities who like to interact with others. In order to complete the B.S. in OSH degree in four years (eight semesters), a new student should have a sound background in high school chemistry, writing, and mathematics.
There is a nationwide demand for people with degrees in safety and health and the demand continues to grow. At graduation, OSH students will be ready to bring their new found expertise to nearly all industries. Specific industries where many of our graduates work range from manufacturing to mining, construction to utility, government to consulting firms.
The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health recognizes the quality of Montana Tech’s ASAC/ABET-accredited programs by providing funds for scholarships, travel, and faculty development through a Training Project Grant. Students pursing a Bachelor of Science (B.S) in Occupational Safety Health (OSH) or a Master of Science in Industrial Hygiene are eligible for the funds.
ASAC/ABET accreditation sets the global standard for programs in applied science, computing, engineering, and engineering technology. With ASAC/ABET accreditation, students, employers, and the society can be confident that a program meets the quality standards that produce graduates prepared to enter a global workforce.
Sought worldwide, ASAC/ABET's voluntary peer-review process is highly respected because it adds critical value to academic programs in the technical disciplines, where quality, precision, and safety are of the utmost importance. ASAC/ABET is a nonprofit, non-governmental organization recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).
The Board of Certified Safety Professionals designated the B.S. degree in OSH as a Qualified Academic Program. Graduates of the B.S. in OSH are eligible for the Graduate Safety Practitioner professional credential.
