Sponsored Program Roles

Principal Investigators (PIs) are the primary individual responsible for the preparation, conduct, and administration of sponsored program funding. At Montana Tech PIs can be faculty, staff, or administrators.

Co-Principal Investigators (coPIs) are when, on some projects, more than one individual is involved in the preparation, conduct, and administration of sponsored program funding. Each person can be named in the proposal and on project documentation as co-PI.

Department Heads are required to approve all sponsored program proposals submitted by faculty in his/her department. This approval is obtained by signature on the Proposal Certification Form. Department heads must also approve all departmental cost share and any faculty course buy outs.

Deans of each college or school are required to approve all sponsored program proposals submitted by faculty in his/her college or school. This approval is obtained by signature on the Proposal Certification Form.

The Director of Sponsored Programs assists faculty and staff with pre-award budget development and post-award budget management. All proposals must have a budget approved by the Director of OSP prior to submission.

Vice Chancellor for Research and Dean of Graduate Studies is also the Authorized Organizational Representative for Montana Tech as delegated by the Chancellor. This positions is the only one authorized to approve of proposals submitted on behalf of Montana Tech.

Proposal Development

Montana Tech strives to produce the best proposals for all sponsors. This section provides resources on grant writing, budget preparation tips, and proposal templates and examples.

Proposal Development Services:

The Grant Support and E-Thesis Manager, assists faculty and staff to submit grant applications with the highest potential for grant funding. This position supports faculty by:

  • Assisting with funding opportunity searches;
  • Assisting with grant proposal applications. This includes Montana Tech and sponsor paperwork and forms, reviewing scope of work/project narratives, coordinating budget review with the Office of Sponsored Programs, and submitting applications on behalf of Montana Tech principal investigators and co-principal investigators;
  • Non-financial post-award topics;
  • Coordinating large projects at Montana Tech for submission; and
  • Assisting principal investigators in locating “boilerplate” language for submissions, gathering letters of support, and other similar functions.
