Remote Sensing Fellowships for Montana Undergraduate and Graduate Students Available

MontanaView is a member of AmericaView, a nationwide partnership of remote sensing scientists who support the use of Landsat and other public domain remotely sensed data through applied remote sensing research. MontanaView is currently offering 6 competitive fellowships ($1,500 each) for applied remote sensing projects for undergraduate and graduate students at each of the four higher educational institutions that are members of MontanaView:
  • 2 fellowships will be awarded at both Montana State University and the University of Montana.
  • 1 fellowship will be awarded at both Salish Kootenai College and Montana Tech.

The goals of these fellowships are:
  • to support students and provide encouragement and resources for them to pursue a career in geospatial sciences and remote sensing; and
  • to benefit the state of Montana by providing information, data, and analysis that will improve the management of natural resources.

Through a competitive selection process, each institution will review and select worthy fellowship recipients for projects that are directly related to Montana’s agricultural, range, forest, wild land, urban, water, mineral, or other resources. Students will be awarded the fellowship at the completion of the project along with the submission of a brief project report (2 pages – due on 5/8/20) that will be delivered to both MontanaView and an identified stakeholder. Students will also be expected to present (oral or poster) at the 2020 Montana Association of Geographic Information Professionals (MAGIP) Big Sky GeoCon Conference, April 6-10 in Missoula, MT.

Each fellowship recipient will receive $1,500. MontanaView will also provide funding to each fellowship recipient to cover the cost of the GeoCon conference registration ($75 per student).

To apply: Please send the following to your institutional MontanaView contact:

  • A cover letter that highlights your unique qualifications for this fellowship.
  • A brief proposal (1-2 paragraphs) for your remote sensing research project. Clearly identify the problem and its significance, the anticipated approach, and a specific stakeholder that you will work with on this project (e.g. a state agency, a community organization, a school or university, etc.).
  • A resume or CV
