Montana Tech Chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers Receives MVP Award

The Montana Tech Chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) received one of the top awards at the Region 6 conference recently on the 17th of November 2017 in Los Angeles, CA. Montana Tech was named one of three 2017-2018 Fall Regional Conference MVPs for making a huge impact despite being a small chapter.

Montana Tech Environmental Engineering graduate student Arundeep Taduri attended the NSBE Conference and accepted the award on behalf of the Chapter. The Chapter at Montana Tech was formed in February 2017 and is the only NSBE chapter in Montana.

With more than 500 chapters and nearly 16,000 active members in the U.S. and abroad, the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) is one of the largest student-governed organizations based in the United States. NSBE supports and promotes the aspirations of collegiate and pre-collegiate students and technical professionals in engineering and technology. NSBE’s mission is "to increase the number of culturally responsible Black Engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally and positively impact the community."

Montana Tech Vice Chancellor of Research and Dean of the Graduate School, Dr. Beverly Hartline, is the advisor to the group which has about 20 members. “Montana Tech is justifiably proud of our NSBE chapter, which was organized by the students only last academic year,” noted Dr. Hartline. “The students are active in research, contributing to several programs on campus, and using and developing their leadership and networking skills. Congratulations to Arun and the chapter!”

Arundeep Taduri, a senator within the chapter, believes the chapter is a great opportunity for students to be able to take advantage of networking opportunities. He and Montana Tech students, Sowmya Sudhakar, a senior majoring in Mechanical Engineering and current vice president of the chapter; and Cosmas Opoku-Ware, a graduate student in Mining Engineering and president of the chapter; hope the group will continue on the Montana Tech campus for years to come and continue to make impacts.
