Recommended Syllabus Statement for Faculty

It is recommended that your syllabus contain a statement addressing students who may have a disability. Suggestions are:

Students with disabilities who believe they may need accommodations in this class are encouraged to contact a Montana Tech Disability Services Coordinator (DSC) at either 496-4429 (North Campus) or 496-3730 (South Campus).

Any student who may need an accommodation due to a disability, please make an appointment to see me during my office hours. A letter from a Montana Tech Disability Coordinator authorizing your accommodations is needed.

General Information & Procedures

Most students will share the information of their disabilities readily with instructors; some, however, decide not to share such information and never seek accommodations. If a student has been granted a letter of accommodation from a Montana Tech DSC, it is the student’s responsibility to share the letter of accommodation with you. A student may choose to seek accommodations in some classes but not all.

When a student brings you a letter of accommodation, please have a private conversation with the student about his disability and how the accommodations will be implemented. If you are concerned that a student has a disability which has not been either disclosed to you or not diagnosed, you may diplomatically discuss that matter with the student or direct your concern to a DSC (Amy Lorang or Cricket Pietsch). It is the student’s right, however, to keep the nature of his disability private.

Granting only the accommodations included in the student’s letter of accommodation is recommended. If you grant a student an accommodation which is not noted in an accommodation letter, you should grant that accommodation to all your students.

Testing Accommodations

If testing accommodations are granted, you and the student may coordinate this. However, it is the student’s responsibility to ask you to send the test to an assigned person or area if this is the arrangement made. This request should be made at least 48 hours in advance of the test. The student should also be coordinating with the assigned person or area to assure a testing area is scheduled. If a scribe, test reader, or interpreter is necessary, those arrangements must also be made in advance by the student. Please include any directions with your test, stating its requirements: open/closed book, notes possible, computer test, calculator permitted, regular time allowed for the test, etc. Also, please direct where you will pick up the test or where you want it returned.
