The Montana Tech Geophysical Engineering Department Presents: Clark Jorgensen

The Montana Tech Geophysical Engineering Department will host Clark Jorgensen from Big Sky Geophysics in Great Falls, Montana on Monday, March 25 at 4:00 pm. Mr. Jorgensen’s presentation is titled, Project Scale Exploration using GRACE Satellite Gravity Data.

GRACE (Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment) satellite data allow for project scale exploration for mineral deposits. These data provide good regional coverage in areas where no conventional regional gravity data exist and GRACE can augment national conventional gravity databases. Mr. Jorgensen used these data in two case studies. The first project was potash exploration in the Bada Basin in eastern Eritrea. GRACE data were essential for establishing regional gradients for modeling isolated gravity profiles across the basin. The second project was gold exploration in northern Nevada. The GRACE satellite data indicated a large gravity high that was not present in the U.S.’s conventional gravity database. Detailed ground gravity surveying confirmed the anomaly and changed the geologic exploration model.

The presentation will take place at Montana Tech in the Engineering Laboratory Classroom Building in Room 202. All are welcome to attend.
