Meet Collette Chorney ’12

Collette Chorney, pediatrician

Collette Chorney ’12 always knew she wanted to become a doctor and attending Montana Tech helped make that dream a reality.

Chorney is now a pediatrician with St. James/SCL Health Medical Group in Butte. She graduated from Montana Tech with a degree in chemistry, completed medical school at the University of North Dakota in 2017, and finished her residency with the University of Wisconsin-Madison this year

"Ever since I was a kid, I knew I wanted to be a doctor," she said. "Tech has a reputation for being a good science school." After visiting campus and making sure it was a good fit, Chorney was sold on Tech’s small class sizes and research opportunities.

While at Tech, her involvement in Chemistry Club helped shape her career path.

"I enjoyed doing scientific research, but came to realize that I really love working with people.

Specifically, Chorney loved working with kids. Being involved in Chemistry Club gave her many opportunities to visit local schools and teach elementary school students about science. Her passion for working with children was solidified in medical school when she was able to rotate into the pediatrics department.

Her goal now is to make sure healthcare is fun and engaging for children.

"Kids naturally have a fear of going to the doctor," she explained. "I’m trying to make sure their visit doesn’t have to be scary. I try to think about what is fun for kids and I make the visit about them. I talk and interact with the kids and not just their parents."

Chorney hopes current and future students at Tech are able to find their passion here just like she did.

"People don’t always think of Tech first, but Tech is an excellent choice for pre-professional health."
