Business Department Adds Marketing & Health Information Technology Options


Montana Tech’s Business & Information Technology (BIT) degree is now offering two new options, Marketing and Health Information Technology. The two options were approved by the Montana Board of Regents at its May 2013 meeting. “Offering both of these new degree options is based on market demand by the industry and our students,” noted Dr. Timothy Kober, department head in the Business & Information Technology program. “The new options will complement our current options of Accounting, Information Technology, and Management.”
 
The Health Information Technology curriculum is an academic partnership with the faculty in Montana Tech's Health Care Informatics (HCI) program and the BIT program. The Health Information Technology option is in response to the rising demand for healthcare information technology in hospitals and other health care institutions today and growing into the future. This option is complemented by a variety of business management, marketing, and computer-related coursework to create a well-rounded healthcare manager. Montana Tech is one of a handful of four year universities, such as Dakota State, Oregon Institute of Technology, Bellevue College, and Western Governors University, in the Pacific Northwest offering a bachelor program focused on the increasing demand for healthcare information combined with managerial expertise. “Montana Tech’s HCI program was the first bachelor’s degree of its kind in the United States,” explained Charie Faught, Health Care Informatics department head. “Our dynamic program is always evolving and maturing, which is required to meet the ever changing demands of health care and information technology. Giving business and information technology students the opportunity to expand into this field will be a benefit to both Montana Tech and the state of Montana. I have had the pleasure of having BIT students in my class, and am excited for having the opportunity to continue our relationship with future students.”
 
“I chose to attend Montana Tech for a variety of reasons. The smaller class sizes and campus appealed to me along with the great reputation and placement rate. After enrolling in business courses, I decided that business management was the degree I wanted to pursue,” explained Kelsey DeWit, senior from Columbia Falls, MT pursing a BIT degree with options in Management and Health Information Technology. “During my sophomore year, I became interested in learning about management in healthcare. With the advice of Traci O’Neill, I took a course in the Health Care Informatics program with Charie Faught. As a result, I started to become passionate about healthcare. When the release of the Health Information Technology option was introduced, many of the classes I had previously taken in management and health care informatics were included within the degree. Throughout the summer I interned in the IT department within a hospital in Southern California. I was able to relate the information I had learned in both degrees to the hospital setting. My future plans include working within hospital administration. I want to thank both the Business and Health Care Informatics departments for the constant guidance and support!”
 
The Business and Information Technology program’s addition of a Marketing option was added due to rising student demand coupled with a growing need for marketing majors across all industries. The courses offered in the marketing curriculum were jointly established by the BIT and the Professional and Technical Communication (PTC) departments. In May, the program will graduate its first three students with the marketing option. The three students are also pursuing the management option. Pat Munday, department head of Technical Communication, is especially pleased with the new marketing option. "This meets an existing need and is a good example of the amazing opportunities for students at Montana Tech," he said, adding, "Combining technical communication and marketing skills results in students who will contribute to Montana's economic growth."
 
“During my junior year of studies for my Business & Information Technology degree, Montana Tech made the announcement that marketing would be offered as another option within the program. My advisor contacted me to let me know how close I was to a double option,” explained Megan Graff, a senior from Helena majoring in BIT with options in Management and Marketing. “She worked out how many more classes I would need to take to obtain options in both Management and Marketing. Without her support, and the support of all the professors in the Business Department, I wouldn’t have known my potential and now I am on track for graduating in May 2014. I will be forever grateful to all of them!”
