Montana Tech's Industrial Hygiene Distance Learning/Professional Track graduate program provides an exceptional opportunity for advanced study in the field of occupational health. Through this program, working professionals can obtain education in industrial hygiene with the overall goal of providing the technical competence to anticipate, recognize, evaluate, and control occupational health hazards. The distance M.S. degree is structured to encourage participative, collaborative, and applied problem-solving strategies to address modern day occupational health issues. Montana Tech and the faculty of the Safety, Health and Industrial Hygiene Department are committed to ensuring equivalent quality of learning in both the distance and residential industrial hygiene degree programs. The courses are facilitated by a world-class faculty whose advanced academic preparation and professional experience help integrate academic theory with current practical application. Students enrolled in the distance program have the same instructors, course offerings, course requirements, and laboratories as the residential students insofar as possible. This includes five days in residence at Montana Tech for the laboratory portion of IH 5286. Graduates receive the academic preparation needed to pass the CIH certification examination administered by the American Board of Industrial Hygiene.

Industrial hygiene is a science-based discipline. The American Board of Industrial Hygiene has defined several criteria to test an individual’s knowledge across the broad range of industrial hygiene subject areas. These subject areas include basic science and encompass chemistry, biology, anatomy & physiology, physics, and mathematics.
We have established admittance standards for the distance learning program to ensure student success. Applicants are admitted on a basis of acceptable undergraduate academic preparation and work experience. Applicants must have a bachelor’s degree from a regionally-accredited college or university in the subjects of biology, chemistry, physics, or an engineering discipline. For full admittance to the program, applicants from non-science or engineering disciplines are required to complete prerequisite coursework in biology, chemistry, math, and physics, that may include the following:
- Math, through first semester calculus and statistics
- Two semesters of college physics
- Two semesters of college chemistry and one semester of organic chemistry or biochemistry
- Cell biology and two semesters of human anatomy/physiology, or equivalent coursework on human biology
Two years of safety and health-related work experience is also a requirement for admittance to this program. Students who do not have professional work experience may wish to apply to our The GRE exam is not required for the industrial hygiene distance learning students.
Students who are Certified Industrial Hygienists (CIH) may waive OSH 4216 Industrial Hygiene I. These students will be required to complete 34 credits for the Industrial Hygiene Distance Learning degree. Students licensed as Certified Safety Professionals (CSP) may waive I.H. 5606 System Safety and Process Safety Management. These students will be required to complete 34 credits for the Industrial Hygiene Online degree. For students who are both a CIH and CSP, both OSH 4216 and I.H. 5606 may be waived and these students would be required to complete 31 credits for this degree.

- April 1 for summer & fall semesters
- October 1 for spring semester
Program Educational Objectives
Program Educational Objectives (PEOs) are broad statements that describe what graduates are expected to attain within a few years after graduation. The M.S. Industrial Hygiene Distance Learning/Professional Track degree program has adopted the following three PEOs.
- Be prepared to enhance their IH-related careers throughout the first four years after graduating.
- Use their education to expand their professional competence to provide IH services appropriate to their employment.
- Act professionally by engaging in career development, recognizing ethical responsibilities, supporting the profession, and being an informed and involved member of their community.
Student outcomes are statements of what each graduate of the program is expected to achieve at the time of graduation. The M.S. Industrial Hygiene Distance Learning/Professional Track curriculum is structured so each student will have obtained the knowledge, understanding and skills in all 21 student outcomes.
- Apply knowledge of mathematics, science and applied sciences.
- Design and conduct common experiments and analyze and interpret data.
- Formulate or design a system, process or program to meet desired needs.
- Function on multidisciplinary teams.
- Identify and solve applied science problems, including advanced qualitative and quantitative problems.

- Describe qualitative and quantitative aspects of generation of agents, factors, and stresses.
- Understand the physiological and/or toxicological interactions of the physical, chemical, biological and ergonomic agents, factors, and/or stressors with the human body.
- Assess qualitative and quantitative aspects of exposure assessment, dose-response, and risk characterization based on applicable pathways and modes of entry.
